3D Laser Scanner

image of the scanner
The Laser-Piczas are a series of desktop 3D laser scanners, that allow you to scan a model from all sides. As these are non-contact scanners, the process is much quicker than with the mechanical Picza scanners.

Model LPX-600 is the successor of the successfull model LPX-250. Most important improvement is the higher accuracy due to the more stable construction of the machine.

SYSTEM OVERVIEW
blue line

The PICZA LPX-600 is a 3D laser scanner. The laser projects a small red dot on the object to be scanned, and by measuring the position of this dot its position is 3D can be determined by the scanner's electronics. The complete scanner comes in a well-designed desktop housing, all control electronics are integrated. As it is a closed cabinet it is perfectly safe in use.
The machine is driven from a PC by the included 'Dr. Picza 3' software. This software enables you to set the area to be scanned and the resolution (pitch) to be used. The rest is done automatically: no expertise is needed, it takes just a single mouse-click to start scanning. 'Dr. Picza 3' can export either point cloud data or polygon data.
As a separate option is available the Pixform Pro software for point cloud handling and surface reconstruction: Pixform Pro can export the geometry as NURBS surfaces. Pixform Pro is a bundled version of the Rapidform software by Inus Technology: Roland makes this software availabe at much lower cost.

CONSTRUCTION DETAILS

The LPX-600 comes with a round working table (diameter 254 mm) on which the model to be scanned can be placed. Two scan-modes are available: rotary mode, where the table rotates during scanning, and plane mode, where the object is scanned from one side. Several plane mode scans can be combined in one operation (maximum from 6 sides), and also a combination of rotation scan and plane scan is possible.
Difference with the previous model LPX-250 is that many internal mechanical parts are now cast in metal, instead of the sheet metal parts used before. This results in a higher accuracy.
During scanning the complete laser unit travels up one step after completion of each horizontal scan line. Maximum object height is 406.4 mm. Minimum possible resolution (pitch, or distance between the points measured) is 0.2 mm, both horizontal and vertical (for rotational scanning 0.18 degree). Repeat accuracy of the measurement (radial distance measured) is +/- 0.05 mm: the closer to the centre, the more accurate.

APPLICATIONS
blue line

Reverse Engineering can be applied by any design professional: for product design, engraving design, and Website design as well ! Scan a hand-carved engraving, or a hand-made foam model. Add 3D animations to your Website ! You can now afford to the same tools as any expensive Hollywood movie studio. Where Reverse Engineering is promoted to be an indispensable tool for 3D CAD users, this cute machine is the first really useful solution because of its price, dimensions and ease-of-use.
