Roland MonoFab SRM-20

Desktop machine for FabLabs, model shops, schools and more

photo of the machine
This stylish new machine is the successor of the famous Roland MDX-20. Having been in production for over 15 years, that may well be the most sold desktop CNC milling machine ever. For instance present in almost every FabLab worldwide.
All this expertise has been used to create an even better new machine:
we present the brandnew SRM-20.

The known weak points of the old machine have been fixed, making this an ideal machine for FabLabs, small model shops
and hobbyist users.

SYSTEM OVERVIEW
blue line

The SRM-20 offers desktop CNC machining. It's most obvious feature is the (good looking) closed cabinet. Together with the dust-collection tray this will keep your desk clean while machining. For increased safety, opening the cover automatically stops the machine. The machine can be used to mill foam, plastics, tooling board ('chemical wood') and modelling wax.

The SRM-20 is delivered including a lot of software. Most important is the Windows printer driver (Roland machines can be accessed as a standard printer), including the V-Panel program that is in fact the machine's control panel. In addition three more programs are present: Modela Player for simple 3D CAM, iModela Creator for simple 2D CAM, and ClickMill for 'manual' jobs.

CONSTRUCTION DETAILS

The flat working table of the machine (metal) can easily be taken off, in order to attach the model or the material block. This can be done simply by using doubly sided adhesive tape, or by mounting some type of clamp. Extra tables can be ordered so you can easily combine several methods.
The three axes move over steel bearings and are driven by stepper motors via toothed belts, kept under tension by a spring. Any cylindrical cutter can be mounted on the spindle motor (30 W, 7000 rpm) using a collet. The machine is delivered with a 6 mm diameter cutter, optional other sizes are available.
A unique feature of this machine is that the controller allows inserting an Arduino control board, giving way to all kinds of integration with other intelligent systems.
